On Saturday, November 26th, the Town held Neighbor helping Neighbor Day to assist primarily elderly and disabled residents with brush removal resulting from Storm Irene and Alfred. The Town Council and Administration wish to thank the over 250 volunteers who gave of their time to work on 70 residential homes. In addition we would like to thank Rockville Bank for their generous donation to cover the cost of food and beverages and to the Lions Club for organizing breakfast and cooking lunch. During the two storm events we have had a number of other businesses step forward to assist in a variety of ways from providing generators to cooking meals for volunteers to providing showers etc., and I would like to recognize a few of them such as the John Olender Corp., The Country Butcher, Star Hill, Papa T’s, Big Y and 7-11. Tolland, like many other towns, is doing its best to address the vast amount of brush resulting from the two storms. We are not doing a residential collection program, but we do have Town crews working on public right of ways, have a debris pile for Tolland residents at Cross Farms and have suspended the burning permit requirement. No other community, that I know of, organized a volunteer effort to assist residents in need and the outpouring of support that we received is just another example of why Tolland is thought of nationally as one of the best communities to live in the country. Again to all those who participated: Town Council members, Town Staff, Residents, Scout Troops, Volunteer organizations, etc., a heart felt thanks. Tolland should be proud of all the volunteers who participated in this event as well as those who helped us during the storm events.

This announcement is addressed to all property owners abutting State-maintained roads. Starting Saturday, November 5, property owners may place all tree-related debris from the October 29, 2011, Nor’easter (Storm Alfred) five feet from the edge of pavement for pickup in the coming days/weeks. Please do not place the debris near, or obstruct access to, any utility poles or wires, fire hydrants, mailboxes or overhanging trees.
The State’s Debris Management Program was developed to expedite debris cleanup related to storms like Alfred. The debris management contractor will continue to pick up the stockpiled debris through December 15, 2011. Only tree-related debris will be picked up at property along State-maintained roads.
A schedule of towns where pickups will take place will be posted as that schedule develops.

To the Residents of TOLLAND from the Town Manager,
I have just completed a meeting with four CL&P representatives including a high level executive who has been assigned to TOLLAND to complete the restoration process. We have been told that there are sufficient crews in town and they will be working long enough tonight to get power back to all lines with multiple customers. Also we have been assigned additional service crews and they are addressing service line issues. If you have a service line issue make sure you have reported it to CL&P so that we can have an accurate record of outages. All service line issues should be addressed tomorrow except for any unusual circumstances. Again all time estimates are provided by the utility company. Read the rest of this entry »
