The programs provided by the Tolland Senior Center offer a support system for residents 60 and older. Some of the programs include health clinics, which include blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar monitoring, foot care and annual flu shots. Monthly newsletters are distributed, reaching those homebound as well as those who are not. Numerous and exciting trips are planned by the activities committee and monthly Out to Lunch trips are planned. The Annual Dinner/Social is always an exciting event and is usually held in the fall. There are also numerous educational programs sponsored by the Senior Center. Movies are shown twice a month and many come to enjoy a game or two of billiards on a weekly basis. Every Monday and Wednesday the Senior Center provides a nutrition program offering delicious lunches for $3.00 per person. This is a well-attended event promoting healthy meals and camaradarie. At the end of every month, the Senior Center provides a dinner in celebration of those who had birthdays during the month and quite often there is entertainment.
Every spring, the seniors present the Annual Variety Show held at the Tolland High School. This is the largest fundraiser sponsored by the seniors and usually draws 400-500 people. On Monday mornings, approximately 60 seniors meet as a part of the “Notables”, the senior chorus. They are in demand, as they perform throughout the area, sometimes 2-3 times a month. Many folks in nursing homes and other senior centers look forward to the joy the “Notables” bring to their facility. These programs provide a support system, and a time to laugh and sing, creating a feel-at-home atmosphere for Tolland seniors. Exercise programs are offered every Tuesday and Thursday mornings. It has been proven that exercise has been linked with increased longevity. It also is a great mood enhancer and aids in decreased depression. The program is low impact, stretching, balancing, and toning, making this a pleasant and doable experience. Overall, the activities offered from this beautiful facility brighten the lives of many people in Town. All residents are encouraged to drop in and say hello.
In conjunction with the Senior Center, there are several programs offered through Elderly Outreach. Home visits and entitlements assessments are available to those residents that cannot come into the Senior Center. Tolland has many generous residents who are willing to give of their time and talents and join the Friendly Visitor Program. This involves going through a brief training session and then being matched with an elderly or homebound resident and committing to visiting on a regular basis. This has been a worthwhile program both for the visitor and the visited. The Elderly Outreach Caseworker, who also serves as the Municipal Agent for Tolland, will assist in the following programs: Medicare (A,B, & D), Medicaid, Food Stamps, home delivered meals, Town and State social services, Social Security, protective services, housing and home care, adult day care transportation and local senior and community groups. The Elderly Outreach Caseworker is also a certified CHOICES (Connecticut’s programs for Health and Outreach Information, Insurance Assistance and Referral Counseling and Eligibility Screening) counselor.
Tolland’s Care & Share Food Bank is located at the Senior Center and supplements food on a monthly basis. Food Baskets are distributed during the holidays to residents who qualify based on income. This has been hugely successful over the years due to the generous nature of Tolland’s residents.
