  • Frequently Asked Questions – Recreation Department

    Q. When is the pond open for swimming to the town?
    A. Crandall Park is open to the public for swimming starting in mid-June, daily, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

    Q. Is the pond tested for bacteria count and how often?
    A. The pond is tested weekly by the health department.

    Q. How late are the lights on at the tennis & basketball courts?
    A. Court lights are on starting in May from dusk until 9:00 p.m., from June through October until 10:00 p.m. There is a button by the entrance gate that needs to be pushed to activate the lights. Due to budget reductions the court lights will only be on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights starting in July 2007.

    Q.  What is the difference between the Pavilion and the
    Lodge?

    A. The Lodge is a very nice indoor facility with a fireplace, bathrooms, and kitchen facilities, which is open year round. The Pavilion is an open air structure with a roof and picnic tables and outdoor grills that is open seasonally.

    Q. How do I rent the Pavilion or the Lodge?
    A.
You can rent either facility by calling the Recreation Department
at 860-871-3610 during regular office hours. It is available to both residents and non-residents.

    Q. I would like to use an athletic field, what is the process?
    A.
At certain times of the year it is very hard to find a free field due to the high number of local teams and number of fields available. We don’t normally allow out of town groups to use any of the athletic fields with the exception of the softball field by the pavilion which can be used by groups renting the pavilion if it is not being used by local leagues.
Local groups can call the Recreation Office to see if any fields are available at 860-871-3610.

    Q. I would like to use a gym, what is the process?
    A.
All but one of the gyms are found in the schools. To find out the availability you would call the school you are interested in using. There is a use policy which gives the order of use to school functions first, followed by Recreation Department uses, local non-profit groups next and then anyone else. There are fees associated with using the gyms or other school facilities.
