    DEFINITIONS:

Regular Solid Waste consists of normal household trash, garbage or rubbish created by single family residents. On Monday, July 2, 2007, Willimantic Waste Paper Company, Inc. (WWP) became the vendor to provide solid waste trash, recyclable and bulky waste/metal collection service for resident households in Tolland. Resident households should use their current recycling bin and the new green-colored rolling cart for trash. Rolling carts are picked up and disposed of through an automated service; the driver never leaves the truck. Trash that is not placed in the rolling cart cannot be picked-up. You may click here for details on the solid waste disposal program.

Recyclables consist of cardboard, mixed paper, magazines, phone books, glass and metal food containers, plastic containers #1 through #7, milk and juice cartons, wet cell automotive batteries and other items as may be identified by ordinance or statute to be recycled. Beginning on July 1, 2009, the new Single Stream Recycling Program will go into effect. This expansion of our Recycling Program will allow for all recyclable material including plastic containers numbers 1 through 7 to be placed in a blue rolling cart without having to separate out the items. The Town will issue a blue rolling cart, similar to your trash cart, during the month of June.  The blue rolling cart will replace your current recycling bin. The standard blue rolling cart to be provided by the Town will be 65 gallons.

You may click here for more information on the recycling program.

Bulky Waste consists of furniture, mattresses, box springs, odd pieces of construction debris, toys or other non-hazardous large piece of waste material. Two tires per bulky pick-up collection are the limit. The Bulky Waste pick-up service is intended to serve the resident’s occasional need for disposal of large cumbersome household items that would not normally constitute rubbish or recyclable items. This service is not intended to replace the need for individually contracted services associated with construction, renovation or a major clean-up. In cases where the determination that the request exceeds our conventional limits, residents have the option of separately contracting for waste removal services or disposing of the items over several pick-up periods.

    • Bulky/metal pick-ups take place the first full week of the month on your regular pick-up day, unless there is a holiday that week in which case the pick-up is delayed to the following week. You must call Willimantic Waste (1-800-286-5335 or 423-4527) at least 4 business days in advance to schedule.

Metal consists of non-contaminated scrap metal which is free of non-metal materials. It also includes appliances, automobile parts, wiped-clean latex paint cans, rims from tires, bike parts, lawn chairs, bathtubs, sinks, microwaves, etc. Propane tanks with valves opened will be picked up. Bulky/metal pick-ups take place the first full week of the month on your regular pick-up day, unless there is a holiday that week in which case the pick-up is delayed to the following week. Hazardous Waste (including oil paint, paint thinners, batteries except alkaline, yard/garden chemicals, etc.) may be dropped off at the Mid-NEROC Household Chemical Waste Drop-Off Facility on Hancock Road in Willington (off of Ruby Road/Route 320, or via Exit 71 off of I-84), which is open the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from mid-May through early November. Mid-NEROC may be reached at 684-3163.

    GENERAL NOTES:

Rolling carts provided by the Town do not belong to the homeowner. Should homeowners move, even within Town, the rolling cart remains at the residence. Any additional rolling carts purchased from Willimantic Waste (for Trash only) by the homeowner are the property of the homeowner.

The rolling carts are designed to provide years of dependable service. Housekeeping of the rolling cart is the responsibility of the homeowner. An occasional washing with water and a little ammonia or disinfectant cleaner will keep your rolling cart from harboring odors.

Normal wear and tear is to be expected, however, loose wheels, damaged lids and the like can be brought to the attention of Wilimantic Waste’s Customer Service Department for evaluation. If the damage is the result of normal wear and tear, they will make the necessary repairs. Damage resulting from abuse, accidents or other causes is the responsibility of the homeowner.
