Animal Adoption

Please call the Animal Control Office at (860) 871-3676 to inquire about animals available for adoption or to schedule an appointment.

The pound is located behind the town’s Highway Garage at 118 Old Post Road. Please do not visit the dog pound without first phoning in order to ensure that staff is on-site and available to assist you.

As a potential adopter, you must:

Be at least 18 years of age.
Have identification showing proof of your current residence.
Have landlord’s consent to bring an animal onto the property and in residence.
Understand that all donations/fees are non-refundable.
Understand that the Tolland Animal Control has the full authority to approve, delay or deny your application.
Understand that the person filling out the application must be the potential adopter.
Understand that we cannot guarantee the health and/or temperament of any animal.
Understand that failure to answer any questions completely and truthfully will result in a delay or refusal of your application.
Understand that this transaction is not a purchase, it is a lifetime commitment.

After visiting with the potential new addition to your family, you will be asked to fill out an application. The application is designed to help us determine if the adoption is in the animal’s best interest, and to assist us in finding the pet most compatible with your lifestyle. Please keep in mind that dogs at our shelter come from various backgrounds. As a potential adopter, you need to be aware that these animals will require an abundance of love, patience, understanding, training and time to bring them to their full potential and become the friend that you want him/her to be.

Upon approval of the application, you will be given a Connecticut state voucher to pay for spay/neuter and rabies/distemper. It is highly recommended that you vaccinate your new pet and have the appropriate tests administered by your veterinarian (dogs: heartworm test; cats: leukemia/aids test).

Please be certain that you have adequate time to spend with your new pet, including the time for training (or retraining), and exercise. We hope you will agree that the animal’s welfare must be our foremost consideration. By State statute we reserve the right to refuse any adoption. We are always prepared to take animals back if it doesn’t work out.

Adoption Fees

If the animal is already spayed or neutered: $5.00
If the animal is not already spayed or neutered: $50.00, and the adopter receives a voucher from the Animal Population Control Program that covers the cost of a spay/neuter plus the cost of a rabies and distemper vaccine.
If a cat has been tested for Feline Leukemia & AIDS, and/or received vaccines, $25 to $35 will be added to the adoption fee. If a dog is heartworm tested and/or vaccines given, $25 to $35 will be added to the adoption fee.
