  • Monday - Saturday, 7:00 a.m.to 10:00 p.m. 
  • Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Chapter 103 Tolland Town Code: Noise Ordinance

Tolland has adopted a Noise Ordinance.  It is located in Chapter 103 of the Town Code. Exclusions and exemptions apply. Click, here to review Tolland's Noise Ordinance.

Section 103-3: Exclusions of the Noise Ordinance

The following noises are excluded from the ordinance and permitted within Tolland:

  • Natural phenomena
  • The unamplified sound made by any wild animal
  • A bell or chime from any building clock, school or church
  • A public emergency sound signal
  • Farming equipment or farming activity
  • An emergency
  • Snow removal

Section 103-4: Exemptions of the Noise Ordinance

The following noises are subject to the special conditions noted:

  • Noise created by the operation of property maintenance equipment during daytime hours
  • Noise generated by any construction equipment operated during daytime hours
  • Noise created by any recreational activities which are sanctioned by the Town, including, but not limited to, parades, sporting events, concerts and firework displays
  • Noise created by blasting, provided that the blasting is conducted between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time and provided that a permit for such blasting has been obtained from state or local authorities
  • Noise created by refuse and solid waste collection, p[rovided that such activity is conducted between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
  • Noise created by a fire or intrusion alarm which, from time of activiation of the audible signal, emits noise for a period of time not exceeding 10-minutes when such alarm is attached to a vehicle  or 30-minutes when attached to any building or structure
  • Noise created by public facility maintenance during daytime hours

Construction Noise

Construction activities must not be in excess of 45 dB (decibles) outside of the Permitted Day Time Noise Generation Hours, see above. 45 dB is not very loud, generally, this means there should not  be construction activities before these established day time hours including; operating heavy equipement, drilling wells, running generators, sawing, hammering, or noise generated from unloading of equipment.

The property owner is respondible for insuring that all contractors & sub-contractors comply with these requirements.

  • Library noises
  • A bird call

What About Roosters? 

Tolland has declared Farming “As-Of-Right” under Chapter 77 of the Town Code, click here view the Ordinance.

Section 16-9 of Tolland's Zoning Regulations* permits roosters on the following sized lots

  • 2-acres or more - No Permit needed. Roosters permitted.
  • Less than 2-acres more than 1.25 acre: No roosters or guinea fowl.
  • Less than 1.25-acres: No roosters or guinea fowl. Variations on maximum number of hens/fowl apply to parcel sizes between 1-1.99 acres.
